GENERATION OF A TOPONYMS GEODATABASE OF ANDALUSIA IN THE INSTITUTE OF CARTOGRAPHY OF ANDALUSIA (SOUTH OF SPAIN)

The generation of a geographical names database is a hard work. This communication describes the process used to generate a toponyms database of Andalusia. The source has been an ARC/INFO GIS cartographic data model with 2745 cartographic sheets at the 1:10000 scale. We transformed this information in a geographical names database with a few macros and a lot of no automatic process. Also, the Geographic Information Systems help us in revision of errors and final design of the geodatabase. The result is a geodatabase with more than 190000 georeferenced records. These records are going to be the core of the Andalusian nomenclator – the next new ICA project-.
